The defense attorney for the troubled Imo radio host Chinonso Uba, also known as Nonsokwa, has sounded the alarm, claiming that he has been receiving death threats from anonymous callers who would not stop threatening him unless he dropped the case.
C.K. Mgbekeonye, the attorney, revealed this in a petition he sent to the Inspector General of Police and the Commissioner of Police in Imo State, claiming that his life is in jeopardy as a result of his involvement in the case.
The lawyer, through C.K. Mgbekeonye and Shekinah Chambers, petitioned the Magistrate Court in Owerri on behalf of the broadcaster on October 23, 2024, against charges of conspiracy, treason, and arson brought by the state police command. Since then, he claimed, he has been receiving calls from unknown individuals.
After speaking on behalf of the defendant, Mgbekeonye said he began getting calls from unknown people using secret numbers who warned him not to press charges or take responsibility.
In the petition, he went on to say that on Saturday, October 26, he was returning from work along Toronto-MCC Road Owerri when he was approached by unidentified individuals in a black Toyota Hilux with tinted glass. He veered into the Toronto Police Divisional Headquarters for safety after sensing possible danger.
I was threatened to remove my legal counsel for Uba when the perpetrators, upon realizing they had failed in their attempt to have me killed, shamelessly contacted me once more from an unknown phone.
“I should not be subjected to any form of inhuman treatment or threatened with death in the course of discharging my professional duty as a legal practitioner,” Mgbekeonye remarked. He added that he is acting within the bounds of the law.
According to Uba’s lawyer, who has seen a lot in the past several days, his life and the lives of his other chamber colleagues are in jeopardy.
“Sir, taking into account the facts that have been explained, we are requesting your immediate attention to this matter so that the assailants cannot carry out their threat,” he pleaded.
